The American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) strongly supports the routine childhood immunization schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). These recommendations are based on decades of rigorous scientific evidence and continuous safety monitoring, and they represent one of the most effective and equitable public health strategies for protecting children, including those with kidney disease, from serious infectious diseases.
Routine vaccination has led to profound reductions in illness, disability, and death from conditions such as measles, polio, diphtheria, and meningitis; diseases that once caused widespread and devastating harm. For children with kidney disease, who may have altered immune responses or require immunosuppressive therapies, timely immunization is especially critical. Vaccines play a vital role in preventing severe infections, reducing hospitalizations, and minimizing long‑term complications in this vulnerable population.
Pediatric nephrologists, working in partnership with primary care clinicians, are essential advocates for preventive care and trusted resources for families. ASPN is committed to supporting clinicians in these efforts and to promoting evidence‑based communication that strengthens public confidence in immunization.
ASPN urges policymakers, health systems, and community leaders to:
- Uphold and promote the AAP‑recommended childhood immunization schedule
- Ensure equitable access to vaccines for all children, including those with chronic illnesses
- Support evidence based and consistent communication about vaccine safety and other preventive healthcare and equip physicians and care teams with information to support the delivery of this care.
The ASPN remains steadfast in its support of the AAP-recommended routine childhood immunization as a cornerstone of child health and community wellbeing.
