JELF Scholar Update

Over the past two years as a JELF Scholar, I have had the privilege of witnessing another of the many reasons pediatric nephrology is such a remarkable community. From attending the AAP Advocacy Conference to participating in ASPN Hill Day, the unwavering commitment of our field to advocacy, mentorship, and, most importantly, to our patients is clear.

One of the most inspiring parts of this journey has been the action beyond the bedside. Working alongside colleagues to advocate directly for children at the national and local levels has been both motivating and humbling. Whether it was at Dr Seo-Mayer’s dinner table listening to Dr Norwood tell us a bit more about the incredible Dr Lewy, or on the Hill discussing pediatric dialysis add-on payments; the wisdom, encouragement, and perspectives on what it means to build a meaningful career in pediatric nephrology has been palpable.

Equally meaningful has been the mentorship and teachings of our community. Dr. Brewer and Dr. Bignall sharing their journeys and teaching on how to bring about change through collective measured efforts, go beyond medicine itself. This is only naming a few of the many wonderful parts of these two years!

My JELF time has reminded me that we have a lifelong community that supports and stands together for patients and families beyond hospital walls. The relationships built through JELF, ASPN, and these shared experiences do not end after a conference or a scholar’s time. They continue through mentorship, collaboration, advocacy, and friendship.

I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from so many passionate individuals and to grow within a field that leads with both compassion and purpose. This experience has further strengthened not only my commitment to pediatric nephrology, but also in community driven advocacy and mentorship to shape the future care of our patients.

I am grateful and I look forward to continuing to grow in this space alongside you all!
