Current Institution, Role and Training
Dr. Rosenblum is Professor of Paediatrics, Physiology, and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, a Paediatric Nephrologist and Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD).
Dr. Rosenblum is a graduate of the Dalhousie University MD Program, the Children’s Hospital, Boston Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology, and a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Bjorn Olsen in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School.
Clinical & Research Interests
The focus of Dr. Rosenblum’s clinical work is inpatient consultant pediatric nephrology and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT).
Dr. Rosenblum’s research focus is to elucidate molecular mechanisms that control normal and malformed kidney development. In genetic mouse models and human organoids, his lab has elucidated the functions of BMP, WNT, and Hedgehogs, has generated several models of human kidney-urinary tract malformation, and has published over 150 peer-reviewed original manuscripts and book chapters.
Biggest Accomplishment(s) in the Past Year
During the past year, Dr. Rosenblum’s lab discovered transcription factors that are regulated downstream of Hedgehog signaling–dependent congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction due to mislocalization of stromal cells at the ureteropelvic junction.
As well, they developed human kidney organoids with mutant forms of KMT2D, the major gene mutated in Kabuki Syndrome with CAKUT, as a platform to understand KMT2D function during human kidney development.
What You Love About Your Job
“I love my ‘job’ since I am passionate about understanding biological mechanisms that underlie kidney formation and malformation as a foundation to provide translational solutions for congenital kidney malformations.
My role as a clinician scientist provides me with the context, job description, and supports to lead my research program and generate complementary clinical and research activity.”
Fun Fact
I am a passionate amateur cellist; I study with two cello teachers and play orchestral and chamber music.
