Current institution and role, previous training
I am currently Professor of Pediatrics, Director of the Acute Kidney Injury Program, Associate Director of Dialysis and Transplant in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, University of Missouri at Kansas City, MO. My previous training includes MD in Pediatrics, Delhi University 1984 – 1986 and Fellowship, Children’s Mercy Kansas City, 1998 – 2001.
Clinical and Research Interest
Fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, Poisonings /ingestions, Acute Kidney Injury, GFR estimations, acute and chronic dialysis. Possibly, one of the few pediatric nephrologists around who still places acute peritoneal dialysis catheters that definitely work better for immediate use than surgically placed catheters in terms of leakage. I enjoy bedside teaching, especially the appropriate method of eliciting clinical signs and teaching basic physiology concepts. Solving challenging physiological predicaments gives immense satisfaction.
Biggest accomplishment(s) of the past year
Nothing big in terms of accomplishment, but was satisfied with my contribution to ISPD CPG for the prevention and management of peritoneal dialysis associated infections in children: 2024 update (published May 2024); and was able to finish article on Chronic kidney disease and ESKD in children for NephSAP while recuperating from medical illness.
Current/future ASPN involvement and/or how ASPN has supported your career
My current involvement with ASPN is very peripheral, mainly attending webinars and case presentation (radiology and pathology) sessions.
Fun fact
Being from India, I was once avid follower of cricket which now I watch only highlights if I get time. Love listening to Jazz and old (1950 – 1970) Hindi movie songs for relaxation.
Social media handle(s)
I am not a fan of social media and not on any platform except limited presence on Doximity and WhatsApp group with my medical school classmates.
