JELF Scholar Update

The time has come for another cycle of the John E. Lewy Foundation Advocacy Scholars Program!

As a member of the most recent cohort, I’ll borrow the words of a fellow “JELF squad” member and say that this has truly been a transformative experience. From learning about the program’s early days and the inspiring legacy of Dr. John E. Lewy over group dinner, to advocating together on Capitol Hill, this experience has opened a door to a supportive and passionate community, one I hope to continue growing with.

As we care for our patients, we’re also witnessing the ongoing changes in healthcare affecting patients. While advocacy is always timely, it is especially critical right now. Lawmakers need to hear our patients’ stories, and they need us as partners when making decisions that affect children’s care.

This spring, JELF scholars attended the AAP Legislative Conference. I had the opportunity to share patient stories ranging from the Medicaid needs of transplant recipients to conversations about social determinants of health with elected officials. Coming together to advocate for children and to learn from one another reinvigorated my drive to do more.

These moments of collective action are just one part of what makes the program so meaningful. Over the past year, we’ve learned from policy experts, gaining tools to better understand the advocacy/policy landscape and grow as informed, effective leaders. These sessions have helped translate passion into purpose, equipping us with knowledge as we set forth with action.

Whether advocating on Capitol Hill, virtually, or through print, I know advocacy is and will continue being an essential part of how I care for patients by amplifying their voices and addressing the systems that shape their health. As the year continues, I look forward to deepening this work and beginning a scholarly project, supported by this amazing group.

We look forward to welcoming the next JELF class! The John E. Lewy Foundation Advocacy Scholars Program is an invaluable opportunity for growth, connection, and action.
