We are proud to announce the John D. Mahan Honorary Travel Award, established to recognize and celebrate Dr. Mahan’s lasting contributions to pediatric nephrology, medical education, and trainee mentorship. Over the course of his career in Columbus, Dr. Mahan served as Division Chief of Pediatric Nephrology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, long-standing Pediatric Residency Program Director, and Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Director. In these roles, John shaped generations of physicians through his steadfast commitment to education, program building, and trainee advocacy, helping define training pathways grounded in clinical excellence, curiosity, professionalism, and service.
Perhaps most importantly, John believed deeply that strong programs are built through people. He invested in learners at every stage, creating an environment in which trainees were supported, challenged, and inspired to grow into leaders themselves. His approach to mentorship reflects the enduring wisdom of legendary The Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes: “You win with people.”
The John D. Mahan Honorary Travel Award reflects this philosophy by supporting trainees as they engage with the broader pediatric nephrology community, present their work, and build the professional relationships that shape lifelong careers. Through this award, we honor John’s legacy by investing in the next generation – just as he did throughout his career.
